She is born to Harvey Welker (a Native American father) and Julie Welker (an African-American mom). She is the daughter of both a Native American father as well as an African-American mother. Walker completed her studies at Germantown Friends School located in Philadelphia's Germantown district in 1994. In 1998, Walker earned an undergraduate degree at Harvard College. Welker has been happily married for more than 20 years to John Hughes who is a well known marketing director of Merck Philadelphia. The couple have two kids.
